Full Marathon Route Description -
The Hyderabad Marathon starts at the People’s Plaza on Necklace Road. The Necklace Road road skirts the picturesque and historic Hussain Sagar Lake. At the starting time of 5:00am, People’s Plaza should present a pretty picture of the Lake ringed by the Lights along the Tank Bund Road. The serenely illuminated Buddha would be seemingly blessing the runners from the middle of the lake. At that time in the morning the temperature should be pleasantly under 20 deg C. People’s Plaza provides plenty of spaces for the Runners to do their Warm-ups and stretches before the Run. Grassy parks and a smooth road surface are a runner’s delight.
Once the Starting Gun goes off, the runners pass through the Starting Arch and proceed towards the Statue of the Late Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. As the Marathoners take a left at the circle onto NTR Marg, Mrs. Gandhi would be looking on encouragingly. The NTR Marg is a superb 1.2KM stretch with the NTR Gardens on the right. The NTR Gardens are a memorial to the Late Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri. N.T. Rama Rao. The Marg ends with the Lumbini Gardens on the left after which the runners pass the beautiful Telugu Thalli Statue to go under the Telugu Thalli Flyover.
The route passes through a short stretch with the Offices of the NIC and GHMC on the left. At the 2 KM mark look for the Gandhi Medical College on the left. The BasheerBagh flyover presents the first elevated stretch before descending to the historic Nizam College on the left. The route veers right here to circle the famous Lal Bahadur Stadium with the Landmark Aliya School on the left.
Passing the 3KM mark, we see a surfeit of historic landmarks beginning with the Public Gardens and the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on the left, the All India Radio on the right and the Balaji Mandir perched above. Soon the runners pass the famous Ravindra Bharathi, the cultural Mecca of Hyderabad. The Marathoners should be now fully warmed up as they run past the historic Mint and Security press. The Mint was founded by the Nizam of Hyderabad and is used by the Government of India today. Look for the temple of Power Hanuman outside the offices of the Electricty Genco. Shortly, the runners pass a shady Banyan tree to do an up and down stretch along the AP Secretariat & the rear of the NTR Gardens.
The 6KM mark should bring the runners past the IMAX theatres and back to the Statue of Mrs. Gandhi, who would now be turning her back on the runners as they encounter the arduous Khairatabad Flyover. As the Runners descend the flyover they can see the Statue of Sri. M. Vishveswarayya, the venerated Engineer. Runners take a right at the Vishveswarayya Circle and proceed along the Raj Bhavan Road. The expanse of the Raj Bhavan should be seen on the left. The next two KMs should be enjoyed calmly as they portend the beginning of the Hills.
The 10KM mark brings the Rajiv Gandhi Statue and the long Punjagutta flyover which starts at the Camp Office of the Chief Minister. The long & winding flyover takes the runners over the busy Punjagutta Cross Roads and its busy shopping area. The descent changes the scenery into the leafy area of Banjara Hills and the beginning of a long 2KM climb.
The gradient of the Banajara Hills climb can be best enjoyed by noting the Colleges on both sides of the road with the Minarets of the Green Mosque providing a punctuation as the road goes past two shopping malls and the famous LV Prasad Eye Hospital.
By now the Sun would have risen but the Runners would notice the coolness because the road flattens at the 13KM mark with the approach of the lovely greenery of the KBR National Park. Runners can truly enjoy the next KM along the gently undulating tree-lined road with the sounds of the Peacocks from the Park on the left.
From the 15th to the 17th KM, the route passes through the upscale Jubilee Hills area and the road undulates with at least one downward slope to give the runners a welcome relief. Runners can help the miles go quicker as they check off all the brand names encountered along this stretch.
As Jubilee Hills ends, the road winds for the next 2 KMs through a relatively flat but narrow stretch of Madhapur. People would be amazed to know that this area was a rural stretch with dairy and farm lands just a little over a decade ago!
At the 19th KM, the road suddenly widens and Hyderabad abruptly changes to Cyberabad. The Iconic Cyber Towers signals the beginning of the Cyber area as the route makes a left for another climb of around a KM. Here the IT boom of Hyderbad begins to show its face with the many Hi-tech names and modern buildings. For those noting the fast paced changes in Hyderabad, the climb should pass pretty easily. What is more the summit marks the Half-way point. The Marathoner would be doubly gladdened to see a steep and smooth descent for more than a KM along one of Hyderabad’s newest roads into the area of Gachibowli.
The runner turns right at the end of the descent and can maintain a steady pace for the next KM which brings up Hyderbad’s newest Flyover: the Gachibowli flyover over the ORR (Outer Ring Road) junction. The 25th KM should be highlighted by the huge DLF Office Complex on the right before the IIIT Junction. Here the Runner makes a left.
Between the 26th to the 28th Km the route climbs and descends steeply along a wide road. The runner can keep an eye out for the pride of Hyderabad: ISB on the right and Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy on the left. The scenic campuses of the IT majors on both sides of the road should help the runner overcome the stiff legs.
At the 28th KM, the route showcases all the strength of the Hyderabad IT industry with gleaming Glass buildings housing the who’s-who of the IT Business world. The runner take a right here and for the next 4 KMs the scenery changes from the modern to the laid back as it passes through the Financial District and into a small village. After the village, the stretch is clear of all development & the horizon of the runner stretches longer as the route continues towards Gopanapally Village which heralds the last 10KMs.
At Gopanapalli Village, the route veers right and after a KM, enters the Campus of the University of Hyderabad from the south side. The University established by the Government of India is set in a lovely environs with plenty of greenery and the occasional peacock to cheer the runner. The route meanders along the different Departments & Hostels of the campus for 4 KMs which should pass quickly because of the pleasant surroundings & the flat course.
The runner exits the University at the 38th KM & embarks on a short climb towards the Balayogi Stadium. The finish beckons as the road crests, the Stadium should be a welcome sight. A loop of 1KM inside the stadium complex should bring the Runner to the finish inside the stadium where the cheering should scramble the runner under the Finish Arch.
